 Robert Hay was an antiquarian and one of the first few Egyptolists. He first went to Egypt in 1818 as part of his service to the Royal Navy. 

He met fellow Egyptologist and artist Joseph Bonomi in Rome, who worked with him and accompanied him to Egypt where they stayed till 1824 to 1828, and 1829 to 1834. Their work involved recording the architecture and inscriptions to produce a plethora of plans. His work is now found in the British Library in London.
