DIA al AZZAWI
b. 1939, Baghdad, Iraq.
Dia al-Azzawi is known as a pioneer of modern art in the Arab world. Arabic script, Iraqi history and heritage, and Babylonian symbols are integrated into much of his work. Active in the arts community, he is the founder of the Iraqi arts group named ‘New Vision’, which sought to unite artists ideologically and culturally, and not just stylistically.
Al-Azzawi received his degree in Archaeology from College of Arts at Baghdad University and continued his studies later at the Institute of Fine Arts, under the guidance of Hafidh al-Droubi – renowned Iraqi artist. This helped in combining his interest in ancient history and painting styles.
Between 1968 and 1976, al-Azzawi worked for the Iraqi Antiquities Department as the director. In 1976, he moved to London, due to political turmoil in Iraq. Here, he tried his hand in printmaking and worked as the art advisor to the Iraqi Cultural Centre. His art from then on, was the result of his responses to the conflicts hounding his home country.
