Dr. Jawaher Khaled Al Bader 2024
An intimate solo exhibition by Kuwaiti artist Dr. Jawaher Al Bader, curated by Shahad Bishara of Visual Therapy, showcasing multiple series of paintings created over the past four years. Collectively, the artworks explore her personal journey of self-discovery from innocence to maturity. Through this exploration, she finds solace in her art, which becomes her intimate space for both expression and meditation.
The exhibition begins with the Journey series, a collection of small works intricately arranged and heavily layered. The works are created in an almost ritualistic painting process of concealing and revealing on mostly recycled canvases from children’s art workshops, a manifestation of Al Bader’s innocent state of mind during this creative phase.
The Journey series also features the immensely large work, Heavens Gate, initiated as a collaboration with Thomas Bosket, who was both Al-Bader’s mentor and teacher during her time at Pratt Institute in New York. Both the scale and unmannered surface of this painting create both tension and harmony as manipulated colors interplay.
The exhibition continues with the Moments series, comprising works that burst with vibrant colors, unveiling the nuanced vulnerability of Al-Bader's experiences and emotions.
As the exhibition progresses with the Repose series, the artworks become more liberated, less manipulated, and inevitably lighter, alluding to the state of contentment and maturity Al- Bader was reaching internally, reflecting her growing sense of inner peace.
The exhibition concludes with the large-scale work Rivers of milk, wine, and honey. Its serene color palette and meticulous brushstrokes reflect her arrival at her present state of maturity.
The collective rawness of the artworks in this exhibition serves as a window into the artist's soul, inviting us, the viewers, to intimately engage with the pieces and establish connections with our own inner sanctums.
