fatih moudarres
b. 1922, Aleppo, Syria.
d. 1999, Aleppo, Syria (aged 77).
Fateh Moudarres was one of the frontrunners of the Syrian modern art movement. Initially a self-taught artist, Moudarres later studied and graduated from the Accaedmia di Belle Arti di Roma in 1960. It was here that he was influenced by surrealistic styles of art. He moved on from his early influences of religious symbolism to more non-objective work in the 1960’s. However, after 1967, political themes were prominent in his work.
Moudarres furthered his education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in the 1970s.On completing his studies, he moved back to Syria where taught at the University of Damascus, allowing him to interact with and influence young artists. It was also here that he refined his skills under the mentorship of Wahbi al-Hariri.
The agricultural crisis, political and social unrests plaguing his home country in the 1960s, influenced the work of Moudarres and his contemporaries; they were moved by the lives of ordinary Syrians in the countryside and intended to depict them in their routine lives and the problems they encounter in the midst of such upheavals.
