MOHAMMAD KASSEM 2023
'SIF,' An Introduction presented by Mohammad Kassem, will be on display at The Sultan Gallery from October 10 until November 9, 2023.
Welcome to SIF, a new architectural practice model exploring non-linear processes and unconventional materiality. Our practice emerged in an academic environment in response to standards and conventionality. Experimental and speculative projects that are typically invalidated for not meeting industry standards have a life in this model of practice. Architecture here expands beyond the physical and material limitations that bind and limit its capacity to explore constructs and constructions surrounding its ontology.
The project showcased at Sultan Gallery is the third activation of our House/Home project. The suspended installation derives its form from context, relying on existing infrastructure to anchor itself into its new environment. Its spatial subdivision is inherently a child of its host, creating a spatial form based on context rather than aesthetics (dependent on its context – Cannot exist on its own). Objects presented within the exhibition are explorations of dwelling spaces, from literal rooms and forms to abstract and infrastructural frameworks that question the difference between house and home.
Being and belonging are ongoing narratives appearing in conversations about how we occupy our built environment. The product of conventional architectural practices often disregards otherness in today's complex social structures. Third places, often subjected to binary logic, only serve conformist and traditional lifestyles. This practice leads to the alienation of anyone who does not follow the status quo.
SIF functions as both a project and practice in parallel; it has no end goal or final form. Its primary goal is to question conventions and standard rules while pursuing new models of architectural practice. Currently, SIF is a non-chronological, non-binary, non-linear collection of things that sometimes do stuff.
