ABDAL FATIMA
Fatima Abdal lives and works in Kuwait and London. Through a combination of mediums including ceramics and photography, her work is an approximation of the landscape of the human body and the natural world.
This project began with her interest in the representation of movement found in plant morphology and behavior. A desire to understand how the natural world moves in relation to human existence. Capturing / creating the moment that the two work in unison. And the representation of the geometrical form and structure found in plants because the essence of a plant as well as our own connection with the natural world is mystical. Through the creation of her vessels, she aspires to show the viewer the importance of highlighting the similarities between plant and human behavior as well as the movement seen in the plant and human body. Her work is made to prompt thought about the natural world, and how little we know about it. Using nature as a point of departure she begins her investigation by observing different plant forms, how they are grounded yet still moving and breathing.
And ultimately the concept of biomimicry, in which we understand that there is much to learn from nature. It is simply in paying attention to the strategies and ways of nature that we are not only able to provide structures for our lives but it is a fundamental reminder on how to be a human being. Fatima's work bridges the gap between what is found in nature and what is found in us, and simply shows that we are similar in movement, in growth, and in navigation.
The work wishes to strike a thought and create a cascading effect in offering a healthier way of living. To put nature as a forefront in progress and no longer the scenery in which we occupy our lives. To understand that we are critical to nature; that our environments are as alive and responsive as us. An intention embedded through all her work is to ask us to observe, study, and ponder on nature as the leading subject rather than the backdrop.
It is common for humans to fail to realize how tunnel visioned and narrow their scope is in navigating life. Only in certain conditions are we pushed to see beyond the frames of our mind and Fatima’s artistic process is no different. Through studying nature and its ability to adapt and grow, Fatima applies the same principles even when creating; tuning herself into nature for inspiration and guidance. While a conversation with a plant is not taking place, the existence of them sparks a conversation to be held. Nature is its own architect and grows independently of humans whereas our growth is bound to them. Each seed carries out its life in accordance to the purpose of its cells and ultimately acts as the larger ecosystem. Fatima hopes that this innate connection to nature and purpose is bestowed upon us, and that
observing nature brings us closer and closer.
The clay allows her to articulate this sense of connection, articulating shape, colour and dimension that bring a sentient presence into her clay vessel. Clay versatility allows Fatima to utilize the material in order to efficiently respond to the natural world's way of movement and life. She experimented with creating works that have the potential to be functional, yet her focus remained to provoke thought and feeling.
