Deema Alghunaim’s first exhibition of prints, Recollections, will be on display at The Sultan Gallery starting from May 30 until July 6, 2023.
Deema started working on her first series of monotypes when she attended a class by Gabriel Feld. She continued to experiment with the medium, producing several series that ranged in color, shape, material, and compositional logic. The works also range in their subject – some depict clearly discernible botanic matter, while others are abstract and enigmatic. Deema explains that what unites the works is that they are visual representations of the process of recollection.
There are two dimensions to the art of printmaking. The process before and the process after the press. It starts with building and planning an image, and then begins a play with the inked objects and plates to create a variation of prints. On her monotypes, Deema meticulously works with clay formations and collected objects in order to make her stark contrasts and rich textures.
While the result is two-dimensional, it ghosts a three-dimensional world.
The exhibition includes approximately 50 monotype prints, as well as some cyanotype works.
